Nice story, but not high quality
Ken Follet knows how to tell stories. This is true again for this book. It is easy to dive into the plot and forget the world around you. You get acquainted with the characters fast and and are anxious to know what is going to happen to them and how they make out on their way. Therefore, it is a great book to just forget everday-life and have many hours of reading fun.

However, as it is often the case with Ken Follet, the author's weak points are his characters - or the lack of them. The book does not contain any characters, it contains types. We never meet any interesting, complex personalities, we meet THE innocent boy, THE virtuous girl, THE capitalist, THE rich guy and so forth. The acting persons are either 100% good or 100% evil and never in between. This makes their actions predictable and an otherwise great story stale.
This circumstance and the announcement that this book is the first one in a series of sequels, seems to make the book a mass product wich the author is interested to sell rather than a book that was written with passion. I am pretty sure that we will meet the very same "characters" in one way or the other in the sequels, just in different situations or historic settings.

Therefore I rate the book with 3 stars - a nice story for entertainment, but don't expect a masterpiece or an exceptionally original piece of work.

Ken Follett will surely solidify his reputation as a master of the pop historical epic with "Fall of Giants," the first installment of a hugely ambitious work-in-progress called the Century Trilogy. As the series title indicates, it recounts - or begins to recount - the chaotic history of the 20th century. Set against this historical panorama are the intertwined lives of about a hundred characters. Don't worry, six pages at the front of the book are devoted to the cast of characters.

The giants of the title, the crowned heads of Europe, are firmly established in their palaces when the narrative begins in 1911 but all gone (except King George V of Britain) when it ends in 1924. In between, various upheavals remake the world, affording plenty of scope for action, and Follett takes full advantage of this opportunity. Apart from the destinies of the monarchs, we follow the intertwined fates of five families, in Wales, England, Germany, Russia and America. Among them a Welsh coal miner and his suffragist sister; an arrogant English earl who is their nemesis; two orphaned Russian brothers, one a scoundrel, one a working-class hero; a pair of star-crossed lovers, she sister of the British earl, he son of a Prussian nobleman, and so on. Kaiser Wilhelm makes a couple of cameo appearances and Churchill has a brief role as an acerbic guest at a country home. We stop in at Wilson's White House and sail with the idealistic president to Europe in 1919 in his vain attempt to sell peace to the world through his League of Nations. Lloyd George and Lenin step onstage once or twice. However accurate their depictions, neither they nor the novel's lesser characters are sufficiently fleshed out to come across as much more than convenient vessels of exposition to carry the story forward.

Follett is so concerned with with stark economic and social contrasts that he opens the story in 1911 on the Coronation Day of King George V, at the same day Billy William turns 13 and begins his wretched life as a coal miner - and the mine is located near the Fitzherberts' stately country home, built on the labors of the miners below. Billy's sister, Ethel, is a housekeeper in the Fitzherberts' mansion and in love with the earl until, out of social necessity he refuses to acknowledge paternity of the son he has with her. Ethel quits her job and moves to London with the child. Subsequently, she and Billy and other characters oppressed by the class system seek liberation in the heady atmosphere of the progressive politics of the day. This is the book's main theme: the superiority of broad-mindedness and liberal thinking over adherence to the old ways, especially those exemplified by a decadent aristocracy. The theme lacks subtlety, but it provides dramatic conflict and an easy story line to follow. Follett understands that his average reader's knowledge is probably rusty, accordingly, he meticulously reconstructs an era and leads us through the follies and occasional heroics of its protagonists. His narrative includes most of the major battles of World War I and events elsewhere, including the failed 1905 uprising against the czar that led 12 years later to the Russian Revolution, perhaps the strongest of the novel's set pieces.

Follett has a comprehensive grasp of the historical record and the ability to integrate research into a colorful, engaging narrative. He's especially effective in describing the buildup to the war, when all hopes of peaceful resolution gradually faded, when arrogance, patriotic belligerence and monumental shortsightedness paved the way for the catastrophes that would dominate the coming decades. Although his tale has flaws, it's readable to the end.

Isn't it interesting that on the day I wrote this review, the hardcover book retailed for quite a bit less on Amazon than the Kindle version? Who would have thought that could be possible for a book that's almost 1,000 pages long?

As a youngster, I was fascinated by the CBS televised history series, "You Are There," which was narrated by Edward R. Murrow. These re-enactments of critical moments made history interesting and understandable to me in a delightful way that helped turn me into a history major in college. I'm deeply grateful for the experience.

I was fascinated to see that Fall of Giants was designed to take a similar approach, while adding the desirable qualities of multiple narrators with different perspectives, much interaction among the characters, and a family saga element that provides even more depth of understanding. Even though I am quite familiar with the histories that are related here, I found myself wondering what historical lessons would be added to the comments made by the "future-looking" characters who often serve as quasi-prophets in the stories. A lot of historians must have worked very hard to be sure that so many historical insights made it into this novel. Fall of Giants has a surface accuracy that's quite impressive. I suspect that a lot of people will learn more about 1911 through 1923 in the UK, Russia, Germany, and the United States from this book than from any history courses that have taken or might take in the future.

When I saw the list of characters, I couldn't for the life of me imagine how they might relate to one another across cultures. The nicest surprises in the book came from the many unexpected little events that Mr. Follett used to bring his characters together and to draw them apart. I couldn't wait to get to the end to see what inventions he would use.

The book emphasizes the story lines of:

aristocracy losing to meritocracy
integrity being better than popularity and wealth
new ideas replacing tradition
duty versus responsibility
women seeking more equal opportunities
male egos being harmful to everyone else

Watch out that you don't read any detailed descriptions of how the characters' stories develop. You will lose a lot of the joy of the book should that occur.

I like books where the main characters have many chances to make decisions, to express themselves, and to deal with adversity. From the combination, I can get to know and understand them much better. Fall of Giants really delivers in that way for characters such as Gus Dewar, Earl Fitzherbert, Lady Maud Fitzherbert, Walter von Ulrich, Grigori Peshkov, Ethel Williams, and Billy Williams.

I am excited that there are two more books in the trilogy to come. I'm ready!

f you are attracted to the idea of working from home now that the credit crunch has hit since day jobs know longer offer the security they did a few short years ago, work from home and home working is the way forward for the person who wants to take control of their personal income and family’s future.

Since the 70s there has been authors of direct mail publications writing that one day we would all have the opportunity to work from home and work the hours we chose, so that we could balance family life and work equally. As you can see many people fell in love with the work from home lifestyle but the work from home opportunities and technology to achieve the dream quite simply hadn’t arrived to allow people to work from home, make money on the internet or travel with businesses so portable all you now need is a Netbook PC and a mobile broadband dongle.

THE TECHNOLOGY HAS ARRIVED

The person who mailed you a catalogue, brochure or home shopping material made the conscious decision to change their circumstances and work for themselves.

HOME WORKING SCAMS EXIST SO BEWARE

Where there are genuine work from home opportunities, there are also con artists out to make a fast profit by deceiving people and playing on their hopes and dreams to sucker them out of their hard earned cash. There are people who will advertise paid home work, the most popular being the stuff envelopes scam, where people are told they will be paid to fill envelopes for money.

Realistically there is no need to pay anyone to stuff envelopes these days as I mentioned earlier the technology to make life easier exists and so there are machines that can stuff envelopes quicker than any human possibly could. You need to exercise caution when considering working from home and use common sense when looking for something to make extra income. If something sounds too good to be true it usually is, now you know the difference between a work from home business opportunity and a home work scam you are better armed to begin your search.

If someone is offering paid home work, you shouldn’t have to pay any type of fee, if they are asking for one then there is something not right, on the other hand if you are being offered a work from home business opportunity you know it is basically going to be your own business and so should be prepared to make a small investment in it.

Manchester City Urban Life with all Amenities

So good, that 'Greater' is placed in the County name. Manchester has it all from high rise urban living to multicultural society with all the trimmings.

Over the years Manchester has seen a massive investment within almost all locations, from the city centre which has seen its shopping centres and accommodation radically overhauled, to the travel infrastructure that has made accessibility much easier for commuters, shoppers and residents alike.

Living Developments

Talk about spoiled for choice, Manchester has some fantastically designed urban living zones. It really depends on your taste in housing but the city has it all. Trendy lofts and apartments, housing share schemes, developments above stores, high rise, low rise, council owned and many areas such as Hulme, Moss Side, Failsworth and Cheetham Hill renowned for multicultural societies and massive investment opportunities.

Manchester does not have many areas that have not seen some kind of regeneration projects that have radically changed the look of property, and living standards for the residents. All in all living in Manchester has become something of a cultural phenomenon; many people simply want to live there because of the changes and the closeness to all the amenities.

Apartment rentals are widely available, and probably the most popular way of becoming a resident in the city. There are so many opportunities one can be absolutely spoiled for choice. More people are moving into Manchester than are moving out, it has become the place to rent an apartment in the North West of England and it is not hard to see why.

Shopping and Entertainment

It can be argued that most of the investment in the infrastructure came after the IRA bombing in 1996 that destroyed part of Manchester's shopping district. Certainly since then the city has changed so much that anybody returning after a 20 year absence would wonder if they are in Manchester at all.

You will be hard pushed to find a shopping area that does not carry something that you need; such is the wealth of shops locally. From the Arndale Centre and its vast mall containing many famous stores to the commercial areas around Portland Street, Cross Street and the cultured shopping quarters of Oldham Street which houses the world famous market style Affleck's Palace. Manchester Corn Exchange is another shopping location to have been transformed after the 1996 bombing, shows off many local independent stores and designer outlets.

Manchester is not shy on entertainment, with several cinemas including an Independent Movie House by Oxford Street Train Station. Bars and entertainment zones are on almost every street including the Printwork's ideally located right by the Andale Centre.

Manchester's nightlife is hardly matched anywhere else in the UK; there are simply too many bars and nightclubs to mention. From Rock Venues to more trendy high class bars with garden balconies, it is nearly impossible to become bored in Manchester.

Manchester City, Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom!

So good, that 'Greater' is placed in the County name. Manchester has it all from high rise urban living to multicultural society with all the trimmings.

Over the years Manchester has seen a massive investment within almost all locations, from the city centre which has seen its shopping centres and accommodation radically overhauled, to the travel infrastructure that has made accessibility much easier for commuters, shoppers and residents alike.

Living Developments

Talk about spoiled for choice, Manchester has some fantastically designed urban living zones. It really depends on your taste in housing but the city has it all. Trendy lofts and apartments, housing share schemes, developments above stores, high rise, low rise, council owned and many areas such as Hulme, Moss Side, Failsworth and Cheetham Hill renowned for multicultural societies and massive investment opportunities.

Manchester does not have many areas that have not seen some kind of regeneration projects that have radically changed the look of property, and living standards for the residents. All in all living in Manchester has become something of a cultural phenomenon; many people simply want to live there because of the changes and the closeness to all the amenities.

Apartment rentals are widely available, and probably the most popular way of becoming a resident in the city. There are so many opportunities one can be absolutely spoiled for choice. More people are moving into Manchester than are moving out, it has become the place to rent an apartment in the North West of England and it is not hard to see why.

Shopping and Entertainment

It can be argued that most of the investment in the infrastructure came after the IRA bombing in 1996 that destroyed part of Manchester's shopping district. Certainly since then the city has changed so much that anybody returning after a 20 year absence would wonder if they are in Manchester at all.

You will be hard pushed to find a shopping area that does not carry something that you need; such is the wealth of shops locally. From the Arndale Centre and its vast mall containing many famous stores to the commercial areas around Portland Street, Cross Street and the cultured shopping quarters of Oldham Street which houses the world famous market style Affleck's Palace. Manchester Corn Exchange is another shopping location to have been transformed after the 1996 bombing, shows off many local independent stores and designer outlets.

Manchester is not shy on entertainment, with several cinemas including an Independent Movie House by Oxford Street Train Station. Bars and entertainment zones are on almost every street including the Printwork's ideally located right by the Andale Centre.

Manchester's nightlife is hardly matched anywhere else in the UK; there are simply too many bars and nightclubs to mention. From Rock Venues to more trendy high class bars with garden balconies, it is nearly impossible to become bored in Manchester.

Everything You Need to Know About Perth

Merely saying that Perth is the most naturally beautiful city in Australia would be a gross understatement. You have to be there to savor the unparalleled and breathe taking natural beauty which will blow your mind away. Even Captain James Sterling who founded this city, had occasion to make this statement and it was perhaps this scenic splendor which arrested his gaze.

Compared to other ancient cities of the world boasting of a rich historic past, Perth seems to be an infant – aged only 175/180 years. But with its baby steps it has taken a giant leap forward into the future and happens to be one of the most ultra modern and happening cities of the world.

The city has a warm and hospitable nature which has helped it to become one of Australia’s hottest tourist spots in a short period. Perth is romantically perched on the lap of the ancient Darling mountain range on the one hand; on the other hand it offers a captivating view of the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean from its front.

This meeting point of mountain, rolling down into the sea is what contributes to the romantic charm and scenic visual splendor of Perth. Nestled in the crooks of nature, it is protected from fierce inclement weather by the Darling mountain range, but offers at the same times, huge opportunities for fun and enjoyment through its golden sun kissed mind blowing beaches.

Some of the must visits in Perth include ROTTNEST ISLAND, SWAN VALLEY, LONDON COURT, THE BURSWOOD PARK, THE OLD MILL, THE PERTH MINT, BARRACKS ARCH, PERTH BELL TOWER, KINGS PARK, BOTANIC GARDENS, and CRUISE TRIPS down the azure sea or a tram ride down the city. Their food and culture draw people from all over to sample a taste of their culture for very inexpensively since the pesos is at a 3:1 ratio with the American dollar.

If you are entering Argentina you will need a passport. There are no specific vaccinations needed and the ones you have received in the U.S. or Europe should suffice. You will want to exchange money before entering the country as this will make it much smoother to do transactions. Make sure you specify you want Argentine pesos, though.

Now you're off for a Buenos Aires vacation. What is there to actually see? Well, Buenos Aires is one of those truly romantic cities. Tango is one of the most popular dances, as you may see people in the streets dancing. It is one of the most popular tourist pastimes and is surely a must do. You can get lessons, or if you just want to watch it, make sure you see the Tango Show at the Carlos Gardel Theatre, along with your dinner.

If you like futbol, or what we call soccer in America, you will definitely be at home. Games and discussions of games are populated all over Argentina.

People are generally out around three or four in the morning at clubs. It is very common to have a siesta or nap around seven in the evening, then have supper or dinner at about eleven. Shopping for the right HDTV is not an easy task - it can be quite daunting. What features are important when making a decision? How do you compare different models of TVs? How do you make sense of it all? This article should help you understand the ins and outs of shopping for a HDTV.

Understanding some of the technical specifications of high definition televisions will make it easier to select the right one for you. First, make a selection based on native resolution (this is the number of horizontal pixels by vertical pixels the has the capability to display.) TVs with a higher native resolution produce a better picture. Sets with a 1080p display have a native resolution of 1920x1080 - anything lower than 720p is not truly a high definition television. Luckily HD TV prices have dropped significantly over the years, which means you can have your cake and eat it too.

The next item to consider with HDTV TVs is contrast ratio. What this boils down to is the difference between a white pixel and a black pixel (or the brightest image to the darkest). Again, the higher the ratio the better off you'll be when it comes to HD TV. If you select a 1080p TV, a contrast ratio of 10,000:1 is stellar - the picture quality of these TVs will blow you away. But there is one thing to watch out for when researching the contrast ratio of a HD TV. Sometimes the manufacturer will advertise a 10,000 or 15,000 ratio that really refers to the dynamic contrast ratio of the TVs, which is different. This is something to look out for when searching for a LCD HD because with a LCD television the contrast ratio tends to be on the low side. The dynamic ratio only reflects the amount of dark and bright luminosity that the television produces over a period of time.

Next, consider selecting from HDTVs with standard definition. Most people still watch many forms of media that are not made for high definition TV, so this is an important feature to have. Although HDTVs can display standard definition from DVDs, VHS, and satellite and cable, the picture quality is not up to par. Televisions that are designed to play standard definition are a better investment.

The video processor is also important. The computer inside the LCD HDTV is the brain behind high definition television - it processes the high definition TV signals coming into the set and displays them on the screen. If this part of the system is not up to scratch, the picture quality will suffer, no matter how good the other specifications are. A cheap HDTV processor leads to a disappointing experience. HD televisions are meant to be high quality. The easiest way to research processors is to read reviews on High Definition televisions and find out what the experts say about picture quality for each system you are considering. Whether purchasing a LCD, or any of the other HD TVs available, research is key.

How Not To Stress Over Finding Your Mother Of The Bride Dress

Your daughter’s wedding is announced. She has butterflies in her stomach and one thousand and one things to do. Her “butterflies” becomes yours and your thoughts are racing just like hers. You, as her mother, will help her plan her dream wedding, just like your mother planned yours. At the back of your mind……”What am I going to wear? Will I look just as beautiful as my daughter on her wedding day? So many people are going to be looking at me as well….”

Fret no more. Here are the RULES but like all rules, they may be broken or should I say improvised and revised to suit you. I say….whatever makes you and/or your daughter happy!

1. Confer with your daughter. She will come up with a color scheme for her wedding.

2. Ask her whether she wants the color of your dress to complement her wedding color/colors or almost match it. Examples of complementary colors to a red color theme is burgundy, wine, claret red, dark pink, and purple. As for a “match”, it would certainly be difficult to have an exact match of the colors, as your dress will be of a different manufacturer, style, fabric, and dye. So, do not stress over this.

3. You, as the mother of the bride, will decide on a color or colors, after consulting your daughter. Suggest to her to be flexible on the choice of colors—perhaps two or three choices would be great. Mother of the bride dresses are not made like bridesmaid dresses, the latter being preordered and tailored months ahead of time for the occasion. Shopping for a mother of the bride dress can be a headache and nightmare rolled into one, especially for the plus size woman or if you live in a rural city.

4. Do not forget to involve the mother of the groom. After you have an idea of what color you would or should be wearing, inform her. She will definitely appreciate that as she will be in a panic mode as well, going through the same motions as you will soon be, looking for that perfect “mother’s” dress.

5. Shop as soon as you can. Finding YOUR dress is important too. Understand that you are shopping for a specific style that you like and look great in, a specific color, and then a specific size. Then, you will need to allow sufficient time for professional tailoring of the dress, to get it to fit just right! Also, what about the accessories like shoes and jewelry? You will be surprised how many ladies come to my online store hoping to find their dress within a WEEK of the wedding!

6. Shop bridal or department stores first. You can get a first hand look at the styles out there and the type and quality of fabrics. Do not ignore online formal wear stores. Visiting an online store is easy and stress free as they are sources of good ideas of what you would like to wear on that special day.

7. Take care of yourself in these nerve-wrecking times of preparation. Remember, you need to look good as well, although it is your daughter’s wedding.

What Stainless Steel Pots Pans Should I Buy

n a regular basis, we use our pots and pans, without thinking much about it. But with the proliferation of brands, base metals, interior coatings, exterior finishes, and claims made by different manufacturers, a consumer shopping for new cookware can without doubt become very puzzled in their shopping experience. Often clerks in retail outlets are not up to date with the different properties of various metals and other materials used in cookware, and the pros and cons of each.

This article is intended to explain the differences in today's products in a uncomplicated manner, and to serve as a general background for persons who are interested in some of the technical aspects of the construction and manufacturing of stainless steel cookware.

Stainless steel is an alloy that begins with basic iron with up to 8 alloys added, depending on the quality. The foremost alloys in SS are chromium and nickel. The chromium provides rust and corrosion resistance and durability. Nickel provides added rust resistance, hardness, and high polishing characteristics.

The figures 18/0 and 18/8 refer to the percentage of content of chromium and nickel. In order to be classified as SS, the metal should contain at least 11 % chromium (no nickel required). Normally stainless steel used in cookware is 18% chromium and 8% to 10% nickel.

Lesser quality SS cookware, mixing bowls, stockpots and accessories are as a rule 18/0, which are usually not highly polished, and could be subject to some rust spotting.

Several metals can be laminated or bonded as one, to combine the advantages of several metals into a cookware body. A case in point would be a 3 layer construction consisting of two outer layers of stainless steel, with an inner layer of aluminum. This is known as a Tri-Ply Construction. This incorporates all of the benefits of each metal into one piece of cookware. The lamination of metals is prepared in the raw material stage, in sheets, and blanks are cut out from the sheets to be transformed into cookware shapes in a press. The full process is highly priced, and this construction is found simply on superior priced cookware.

A uncomplicated way to test whether or not a stainless steel pot is 18/0 or 18/8 is to place a magnet alongside it. If the pot is magnetic, it is 18/0...If not, it is 18/8 (or 18/10). The addition of nickel neutralizes the natural ferrous properties of the iron in the stainless steel.

Brent has a variety of attractions to offer visitors. The most famous attraction is Wembley Stadium which has over 1 and a half million visitors each year who are able to enjoy live football and rugby alongside its usage for huge international concerts. It is regarded as one of the top venues for global sport from The Worlds Athletic Championship to the Olympic Games.

Wembley Stadium opened in 2007 and has now become the primary space for concerts as it has a platform for music performances which are usually operated on the west end of the stadium in order to provide fans with an extraordinary view. The seating has been arranged so that all visitors have enough room to relax and watch the show and also allows for a higher roof line alongside a specially created protected sound system.

For a historical guide to the area, visitors can go to Brent Museum where you will find a Community Gallery and current exhibitions located on the ground floor of the building. The museum showcases the vast multiculturalism apparent within the borough of Brent and illustrates the diversity in local communities and cultures.
